Pittsburgh family, please join us for the New Moves Contemporary Dance Festival at Kelly-Strayhorn Theater May 9-12! Maria was recently in Pittsburgh for an Understanding & Undoing Racism training and to meet with folks at the August Wilson Cultural Center. It’s exciting to go back so soon and keep learning about the communities there.
About the Systems of Solidarity and Communities of Support panel that Maria is part of on Saturday: A conversation with dance artists and community builders who have supported and made space for radical Black aesthetics within systems of dance production and presentation in Pittsburgh and throughout the US. We will focus on recent and past programs, including the Urban Bush Women’s Choreographic Center Initiative, ACRE (Artists Co-creating Real Equity), Pittsburgh’s Point Park University Dance Program and the historic August Wilson Center Dance Ensemble, to explore holistic approaches to cultivating experimentation and commitment to the radical. Moderated by KST’s Executive Director, janera solomon, our conversation seeks to illuminate and learn from innovative models created by these groundbreaking artists and organizers.
Featuring:
- Maria Bauman-Morales, Artistic Director, MBDance and Co-founder, ACRE (Artists Co-creating Real Equity)
- Greer A. Reed, Dance Department Head, Chicago High School for the Arts
- Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Founder, Urban Bush Women and the UBW Choreographic Center Initiative
