Our Artistic Director Maria Bauman was recently named a 2017/18 Artist in Residence at Brooklyn Arts Exchange (BAX)! The BAX Artist in Residence program is tailored to each artist’s unique needs, process and artistic practice, and it includes peer support, collaborative problem-solving and constructive criticism. Each artist receives free hours of rehearsal space, an annual stipend, performance and curation opportunities. In addition to Maria, luciana achugar, Tanisha Christie, Catherine Galasso, Aya Ogawa, and Mariana Valencia are also artists in residence. Congratulations to all!
At BAX, Maria is embarking on a new MBDance project: Navigation (working title). Like many of us, she is moving carefully, with and without ease, over sometimes unexpected terrain. As such, she is continuing her study of inclined surfaces and uneven terrain as surfaces for dancing. Her central questions for this artistic practice are: “What instruments and maps do I, and we, have to guide our journeys–recipes, ancestral memories, daily routines, etc? What specific, unique physical capacities can I utilize to navigate uneven terrain? What are the costs and/or the gifts of constantly navigating, both physically and emotionally?”
