Maria Bauman will lead teenagers from The Door (NYC) in a creative practice through which they will generate contributions to the dying and dying and dying Gallery Exhibition on view from Friday, August 18 – Friday, September 22. This dance and multi-genre workshop is based on Bauman’s new evening-length work dying and dying and dying.
Beginning with free writing and movement exercises, this workshop will also bring participants on a walking tour to the nearby African Burial Ground. Upon returning return from the sites, Bauman will lead participants in dancing their impressions of the journey.
The workshop will close with a memorial-building activity wherein the teens can choose from provided materials to create a collective memorial to both experiences and to people and experiences who are no longer. This is a joyous and cathartic activity, rather than a maudlin or somber one.
