MBDance Artistic Director Maria Bauman-Morales is working on a non-proscenium and site-responsive multi-disciplinary work called Desire: A Sankofa Dream (DESIRE). DESIRE includes dance, original text and installation and it is a celebration of Queer People of Color survival technologies such as embracing fantasy and agency. Before the pandemic, the piece was meant to spill out simultaneously across several spaces with witness-participants (audience members) choosing where they would go, and when. Now, Bauman-Morales is exploring a live digital version of DESIRE and pushing the boundaries of live, online artwork. For BAAD!, MBDance is sharing excerpts from this exciting new work!
Desire: A Sankofa Dream is being developed with support from Dance NYC and from the Urban Bush Women Choreographic Center Initiative funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Ford Foundation. This work is also sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC). It began with support from Brooklyn Arts Exchange’s Artist in Residence initiative.
